Intel Builds a Private Cloud

Intel’s research and development group was the first internal segment to increase efficiency with an infrastructure- and platform-as-a-service approach, improving its server utilization rate from 59 percent in the first half of 2006 to 80 percent today. By reducing infrastructure spending and avoiding building new data center facilities, the company expects to save nearly $200 million. Following this success, Intel decided in early 2009 to build an enterprise private cloud for its office and enterprise groups.

For years, Mac users who were tired of performing the same mind-numbing tasks over and over again used automation utilities (aka, macro utilities) to make life easier. Such programs used triggers–keyboard actions, timers, or system events–to initiate actions that you configured. So, for example, you could create a macro that, when you pressed a couple of keys from any app, would open a new Finder window in Icon view.

Google Announces WebM Video Format: Future of HTML5 Video?

Among the announcements made at today’s Google I/O keynote is WebM, a new open-source, royalty-free video format based around the VP8 codec intended for use with HTML5 video. The WebM project’s goal is to develop “a high-quality, open video format for the web that is freely available to everyone.” The project has the backing of Google, Mozilla, Opera, and numerous other companies. If it catches, on, it could settle the rift that currently exists with HTML5 video support, thus speeding up HTML5 adoption.
